A winter tale with Bran the Robin<\/em><\/strong><\/p>

The frost was already creeping across the grass when Bran fluttered to my window, tapping the glass with his tiny beak.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

\u201cCome on,\u201d he chirped softly. \u201cThe sea\u2019s gone walking again.\u201d<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

I wrapped my scarf tight and followed him down through Meols, where the tide had slipped away and left a great shining path of silver flats behind. Each step crunched softly; each breath turned into a little cloud.<\/p>

Bran landed on a driftwood post.<\/p>

\u201cKeep close, little explorer. Tonight the light comes from the land, not the sky.\u201d<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

Far out across the empty shore, something glowed \u2014 soft and pale, like moonlight trapped inside old wood.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

We walked toward it.<\/p>

The world was quiet.<\/p>

Even the waves held their breath.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

When we reached the glowing shape, I realised it wasn\u2019t a lantern, or a star fallen to earth.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

It was Orren \u2014 a great winter tree rising from the sand, his bark glowing with frost-blue light. The glow pulsed gently, like a slow, steady heartbeat.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

Bran perched on one of his roots.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

\u201cHe watches the flats when night is coldest,\u201d he whispered. \u201cGuides anyone who loses their way.\u201d<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

I placed my hand on the bark.<\/p>

It was cool \u2014 but alive.<\/p>

A warm hum travelled through my fingers, like a memory waking up.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

\u201cTime to go,\u201d Bran said, fluttering near my shoulder. \u201cThe tide will want its path back soon.\u201d<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

As we walked home, the glow faded behind us, returning to quiet winter dark.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

But the warmth stayed with me \u2014 the warmth of something ancient and kind keeping watch over the shore.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

Some guardians don\u2019t need to speak.<\/p>
