The air was still, held low over the fields, carrying the muted scent of damp grass and fallen leaves. The land here does not draw attention to itself. It settles.

Beyond the village edge, the orchard opens quietly. Trees are spaced with care, their lines interrupted only by age and small variations of ground. The soil is soft underfoot, darkened by repeated seasons of tending. Nothing here appears accidental.

Mira stands among them without distinction. Her trunk bears the marks of pruning done long ago, cuts softened by time and weather. New growth follows old decisions. Branches reach where light has been allowed to reach.

I paused nearby while the afternoon held. There was little movement — only the occasional shift of leaves as air passed through, and the distant sound of work carried from elsewhere. The orchard remained in its own measure of time, neither hurried nor idle.

She does not stand apart from this place. She is shaped by it. The ground, the spacing, the care given and withheld — all remain present in her form.

When I left, the path closed behind me.

The orchard continued as it was.

From the Greengatherer’s Journal

I came into Hoylake along the promenade, where the houses give way gradually and the ground opens toward the water.
