I was following the winter light toward Hoylake this morning, but the shore asked me to stop right here—at a place some people call West Kirby, and others call Hoylake. I rather like that. It feels like a secret in-between stretch, as though the coastline is quietly deciding which story to tell. Look how the sand changes colour—soft gold here, rusty red there—like the sea has been painting with iron and sunlight.

Come closer to the dunes with me. See how the grasses bend under tiny crystals of frost? Each blade looks tipped in silver, as though winter placed a feather on every stem. When the breeze arrives, the grass rattles gently—like nature is turning pages of a book only winter can read. If we stand still for a moment, you might hear it too… shhh… it almost sounds like the dunes are whispering their own stories.

Look down here, beneath the frozen tufts. The sand is patterned with ripples—soft waves made by tides long gone. But look again! Frost has settled into each groove, turning the ripples into shining stripes. It’s like someone drew gentle lines across the beach while you were sleeping. Some patterns are straight, some curved, and some curl like tiny shells. I love how winter uses the same sand, but makes a whole new picture every morning.

Now, let’s walk a little further. Careful—this patch of sand is firmer, almost crunchy with cold. See those little mirrors of water trapped between the rocks? Frozen on top, but maybe still swirling underneath. If you bend down just a little (I’ll hop beside you), you’ll see the sky looking back—a pale, sleepy sky reflected in tiny winter puddles. Sometimes clouds drift across them, like little boats made of light.

The Red Rocks remind us of something gentle:

Even familiar places change in winter.

Patterns appear,

colours shift,

and the world becomes a quiet surprise waiting to be noticed.

🧭 Explorer Field Notes

🪶 Count how many frost-tipped grasses you can see

🪶 Find one sand ripple and draw it in the air with your finger

🪶 Discover a tiny mirror-puddle and see what sky-shapes it holds

The tide is stirring now—I can hear its quiet breath returning. I’ll follow the frosty morning along the shore toward Hoylake next. I think the winter light gathers in little sparkles there, like lanterns resting on the sand.
